consolidation tool

I’ve been using the server consolidation tool to migrate data from
our direct attached storage NW6.5 sp3 servers to NW6.5 sp5 SAN attached
servers.

I’ve been steadily going though the data, and it has been working
fine. But now whenever I kick off a copy it doesn’t copy any data.
The window pops up and the time ticks away, but never starts to copy any
files. Eventually I have to stop the job, this then leaves NUWAGENT.NLM
still running on the source server, and I cant rested the system or unload
the module. (Power button to restart)

I’m puzzled as to why this has topped working as I have changed
nothing on any of these servers. Also tried running the job directly from
the server (NUWAGENT.NLM – a) but get the same results.

Anyone got any idea what could be causing this to stop working?

Re: consolidation tool

Just a few things to check:

- are you use the latest version of the consolidation tool?
the latest version si this one:

http://download.novell.com/Download?buildid=fxmzE0UYjbs~

- do you have IPX laoded on the destination server? There is a known bug
with the SMS modules from SP6 that will cause the SMS connections to hang
is IPX is loaded on the destination server, even if IPX is not used for
the SMS connection. Maybe you have some post SP5 updates installed that
also causes the same problem on your SP5 server

- do your volumes have sandard names? E.g. servername_volumename? The
migration and consolidation tools may have problems if you have non
standard names for your volume objects.

- as an extra safety, make sure your server and your destination servers
have each listed the other server in their HOSTS file in SYS:ETC

You may also take a look at the following document:

http://wiki.novell.com/index.php/Migration_Wizard

While this document is mainly targeted at Migrations rather than
consolidations, a lot of tuning and preparation suggestions apply to both
migrations and consolidations.

Re: consolidation tool

Mi Marcel

thanks for getting back to me.

yes I'm running the latest version, not running IPX on the target SP6
server, but am on the source sp3

my target volume names are data01, data02 etc so guess non standard.
I don't have them in the host file, so will add them.

the thing I don't get is that its been working for the last 8 months, but
just suddenly stopped working.

the only change i can think of changing is the tsafs /nocachingmode to
help with the speed of my diff backups. But I've tried setting this back
to default with no effect.

Just to make sure you don't misunderstand me:

You can name your physical volumes as you like, but the NDS Names for your
volumes must be the standard servername_volumename.

Re: consolidation tool

understand now, yes my NDS volume objects are standard then.

I've added the entries to the host files (+rebooted) still get the same
issue. Its a real pain, not only does it not work but also puts the
server in a state that i have to kill the power

Re: consolidation tool

Have you checked the version of the consolidation tool to see if it is up
to date?
Does your migration workstation have an up to date client installed?
Is your workstation configured IP only, or does it also have IPX support
installed?
Are the 3 machines on the same LAN or is there a firewall somwehere
inbetween?

yes have the latest version. workstation is up to date. been running it
from 3 different workstations in the past which all worked, now none do.
All IP only.

yes servers are on the same LAN no firewall

all a bit strange isnt it

I've used XXcopy in the past before consolidation tool, i may have to go
back to this if I can't fix it. is there a way of copying over the rights
fo you know
