You need an LDAP server, yes.

I think not necessary -
ifolder server 3.8 on openSUSE 11.2

when configuring :
/usr/bin/simias-server-setup
Use LDAP: N

Cannot find anything about that in the iFolder docs though. I always
assumed that iFolder required LDAP, where else should it find users?

LDAP is default option.
When iFolder is configured without LDAP it uses local database (not /etc/passwd - you need to create users via http://ifolder.ip/admin)
