eDirectory 8.8 logging to a central syslog

Hi,

I am using the latest and greatest NOWS and I would like to configure eDirectory 8.8 to log to the built-in syslog-ng daemon.

Apparently there is an option in the /etc/opt/novell/eDirectory/conf/nds.conf that you can set to redirect the logging but it does'nt seems to work for me.
n4u.server.log-file=syslog

Even if I restart the rcndsd service, it keeps logging to the previous path...
/var/opt/novell/eDirectory/log/ndsd.log

I also tried to redirect it to another path but with the same result.
n4u.server.log-file=/var/log/ndsd.log

Is this a caching issue ?

Thanks for your help and time.

I don't know that it is supposed to work with syslog. Did you find some
documentation stating it would? Also there isn't a ton of data in this
log. You may be more-interested in Novell Audit components for audit-ish
events.

Good luck.

Good luck.

Here is what is documented on the eDir 8.8 doc.

..."
Specifying the Log File Name
To specify the location of the log file where the messages will be logged, use the n4u.server.log-file parameter in the nds.conf file. By default, the messages are logged into the ndsd.log file.

For example, to log the messages to /tmp/edir.log, type in the following:

n4u.server.log-file=/tmp/edir.log
To log the messages in the system log, use the n4u.server.log-file parameter as follows:

n4u.server.log-file=syslog
"...

Concerning the eDir log information, My goal is to centralize all services & usage information to a central syslog server.

Thanks

Re: eDirectory 8.8 logging to a central syslog

ericp_gardeplus_ca,

I tried on a sles server having edir 8.8.3 installed to change that n4u.server.log-file setting to something like /var/opt/novell/eDirectory/log/syslog.log. After restarting edir (rcndsd restart) I got still all logs to the old file. This seems to be a bug, whereas I have not tested it on oes 2 sp1 having edir 8.8.4 installed.

Reading your comments, I'm not sure what you want to configure.

Do you want to write the edirectory log messages to the syslog daemon that that one will process all it's rules and depending on them it will write the log entries to different log files and additional you want to send the messages to a different server that works as a central syslog server ? Or do you just want to change the logfile ?

Re: eDirectory 8.8 logging to a central syslog

My guess is that the /etc/rc.d/ndsd script is not passing the "n4u.server.log-file" argument properly.

Main goal clarifications.
1) Have OES services logs processed by a local syslog daemon.
2) Configure the local syslog (syslog-ng) to process (rewrite/filter/transfer) logs to a central one.

The central syslog separates inbound logs to multiple separate files using text parser/text filter arguments.

However, after reading the syslog-ng documentation, I found out that it is possible to keep track of local files and assigned them as a syslog source. I will try to use this method for pushing logs to my central syslog.

Take note that I'am using eDirectory 8.8.4.

If this would work, this would be the only chance you have.

1) Have OES services logs processed by a local syslog daemon.

The ndsd can only log to a local file, not the syslog daemon.

2) Configure the local syslog (syslog-ng) to process (rewrite/filter/transfer) logs to a central one.

Even if you could set the log file to something like /var/log/messages where most log entries were written, ndsd would write directly to that file and not using syslog. Therefor those logs would not be forwarded to the central syslog.

So either syslog can watch the files or you would need something similar to logsurfer in sles 9.

Bug# 507813 and 507820 reported for this. Thank-you for the report.

Good luck.
