failed to begin scan for directory networ~1 , ret=fffdffd1

I have novell 6 service pack 5 and brightstor arcserve 9.01.

Whan I do a backup of my volume I have this error:

Failed to begin scan for directory volume:\networ~1, ret=fffdffd1, conn=2

The correct name of this directory is : network trash folder.
Why the name of the directory is break off?

This error doesn't happer for each directories but only on this.

Which is the purpose of the directory "network trash folder"?

it is necessary to backup the directory "network tash folfer" ?
Must I do it?

thanks

Monica

Monica,

At the risk of getting shot down, we have had this fail on us in the past and, as a matter
of course, do not include the folder as part of the backup job.

HTH,

Grev.

Re: failed to begin scan for directory networ~1 , ret=fffdffd1

Grev,

excuse me, I don't understand well.

It could be necessary to restore something from this directory?

If I not include the folder as part of the backup job , the server can be
risk of getting shot down?
Is it correct?

Why this error appear only when backup a volume different from SYS?
Also into SYS there is this directory.
From Brightstor arcserve manager, if I expand the server , under sys I
can see "NETWORK TRASH FORLDER", while under another volume, I see
"NETWOR~1".
why?
Is it a problem of CA brightstor arcserve 9.01?

thanks for all
Regards,
Monica

Re: failed to begin scan for directory networ~1 , ret=fffdffd1

Tony,

thanks for quick answer.

I think that the link is for BAB r11.1 SP1. But I 'll open an issue on
support CA (that is free) if I can add the option also for Brightstor
arcserve for netware 9.01.
thanks

Monica

Does the server have long name support enabled on the volumes you are
backing up ? Truncated file and folder names such as "NETWOR~1". can result
from long name support not being loaded. To do this on each volume issue the
following command:

load long.nam
add name space long to volume [volumename]

I have verified by command "volumes" on console of the server.
It appears :
VOL dos,mac,nfs,long

SO I thing the long name it has been loaded.
Is it correct?

It is for Macintosh computers to store their deleted files in when
deleting files from server volumes (the trashcan on the Mac OS screen).
You probably don't need to backup these files.

Re: failed to begin scan for directory networ~1 , ret=fffdffd1

Hi Andrew,
Now I have understand.
Since I haven't Mac computers, this directory is always empty and so I
can't exclude from backup job.
Is it correct?

thanks for all

Assuming you mean "I _can_ exclude from backup job", yes, that's correct.

Yes, long name space support is already loaded on the volume.

why do you want to backup your network trash folder to tape?
