iFolder 3.0 File Corruption

It appears there is a corruption problem with downloading iFolder3.0 files.
A Changes Only syncronization does not work if syncronizing to a second
workstation. After synconization, looking at it on a shared workstation
shows the file a jumbled mess. The original is fine, and removing it from
the folder and dropping it back in will do a full sync of it and fix the
file on the second computer. Retrieving the file from web access from any
account after a changes only sync shows that the file is fine on the server.

I verified this problem occurs with Word and Excel 2003 files. It did not
happen with a large text file.

Any Ideas? I am using the 20050608 version on an OES Linux install. It
looks as though ifolder3 is out of beta, is the version 20050608 the
non-beta version?

Thanks.

- James

Re: iFolder 3.0 File Corruption

James,

2005.06.08 is the version of the client that comes with the iFolder
Enterprise version, and that's the non-beta version. Possibly you may find
a later client on the www.ifolder.com open source website, but so far I've
understood, they're not guaranteed to work with the Enterprise backend
server.
What OS are you using on both workstations? Same or different?
Have any or both had a previous version of iFolder client installed on it?
Is there anything untoward in either client's log file (simias.log in
\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\simias\; I forgot where
it is on Linux)? Are there any odd characters in the filename?

File corruption should most definitely not occur in any circumstance.

Re: iFolder 3.0 File Corruption

I have noticed the same thing with some zip files going from identical
clients.

It's not the issue described in paragraph 4.4 of the known issues, is it?
http://www.novell.com/documentation/ifolder3/readme/data/readme.html#buxgcik

If you're running an anti-virus program, is it scanning the simias\work
area\ ?

Re: iFolder 3.0 File Corruption

I did not exclude the simias work area from virus scanning. I will try that
and post back.

Re: iFolder 3.0 File Corruption

I did have iFolder2.1 installed on the primary computer, it was uninstalled
and replaced with 3. The second computer that recieves the file was a fresh
image. both computers are Windows XPsp2, with McAfee antivirus.

I have been trying to reproduce it with different file types and sizes. So
far I have only been able to reproduce it on office 2003 documents. The
filename and size doesn't appear to affect the problem, good or bad. The
problem occurs starting from either workstation.

The problem only occurs on larger files, apparently it doesn't bother with
delta sync if the file is small. I am able to reproduce the problem on all
Office documents I have tried.

Of the files in the attached logs, all 3 were corrupted on the other side.
Uploaded from one machine, opened and modified on the other, and on the
original machine it is corrupted after downloading delta changes. Again, no
corruption on upload or server, only delta download.

Re: iFolder 3.0 File Corruption

That was my first guess, I did try disabling antivirus altogether with no
affect.

It would appear that what you have here is a genuine, reproducable bug, so
if you're in a hurry I'd open an incident with Novell. I haven't got O2K3
at hand, so I can't reproduce it at the moment.

Could you post (or mail) the server log for the same period, please?

Re: iFolder 3.0 File Corruption

/var/opt/novell/ifolder3/simias/simias.log does not show any entries during
that period. I have attached the access log for that time. If there are
others, let me know.

That's odd: if a file is synced to the server, simias.log should record
that. The apache log files should record some activity, too. Anything in
there?

Vovo, can you check the simias.log file on the server as well, and see if
you have something in there?
It's /var/opt/novell/ifolder3/simias/simias.log .
Also, can you tell me if you're running an antivirus program on the clients?

Re: iFolder 3.0 File Corruption

Hi there,

In reply to your posted message on the Novell Support forums
(novell.support.ifolder) on file corruption occuring in iFolders--

I've had contact with Novell, and they are aware of this problem. They even
have a fix for it that will emerge on the OES patch channel in the next
couple of days or so.

Hope this helps,

-Bert
