ipx retry count - Adaptec DuraLAN

Hello!

We use Novell 3.2 with an Adaptec 6944a-Network-Adapter. At the moment there
are 1 of 4 lines connected to the switch.

If we connect all lines or more than 1 the Novell Client 4.90 SP2 needs many
retries (manually initiated) to find our server (every restart). After
log-in everything works fine.

The Handbook 'DuraLan Fast Ethernet NICs User's Guide' (Adaptec) describes
in chapter 'Connecting Clients to the Netware SA, FO, PA, or FEC Server' how
to increase the parameter 'ipx retry count' for DOS (net.cfg) or Windows NT
(hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\services\netware
workstation\paramters\retry count).

But I don't find it for Windows 2000 and Novell 4.92 SP2.

Can someone help us?

Re: ipx retry count - Adaptec DuraLAN

Did you manually set the IPX Frame-type to 802.2 or 802.3 to match your
server?

The IPX Network number setting in the client should be left at all
0000000s and not manually set to your production IPX network number.

These two things tend to be the largest cause of an issue.

I've never had to actually increase the retry settings.

Re: ipx retry count - Adaptec DuraLAN

Thank you Craig.

No, the ethernet-type is not the problem. I fixed the values manually to one
type, but the problem was not solved.
But if I tear the other cables from the 4-port-card until one is left, it
works just-in-time either manually or automatically frame-type-recognition
is set. The server is found at the first try then.

Fixing the IPX-Network number didn't help, now it is set to 00000000 again.

Adaptec recommended to set 'ipx retry number' for each client to 255. The
default is a value less than ten.

Re: ipx retry count - Adaptec DuraLAN

I dont think this setting exists anymore.

Under NT/2K/XP, the IPX stack is handled by Windodws and is not
installed by the Novell Client.

I am unable to find any such settings for the Windows IPX stack.

Try increasing "Minimum time to net to 10,000" as well as increasing
"Name Resolution Timeout"
