rcd refuses to start

I installed OES Linux with _no_ extra Novell stuff.

I've installed rcd, rug, red-carpet but I cannot get the rcd daemon to start up.

/etc/init.d/rcd restart

Sep 23 11:21:12 cassini rcd[19764]: Red Carpet Daemon 2.4.4

Sep 23 11:21:14 cassini rcd[19764]: (This may mean that another rcd process is already running, or that

There is no server listening on port 505, however. Turning off the firewall doesn't help.

I have another server and rcd runs just fine. Uninstalling rug, rcd, red-carpet and reinstalling doesn't fix the problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Brian

Try 'fuser -v 505/tcp' to verify no processes are using 505. If there
arenn't then try :
strace -f rcd
or
strace -f -e trace=open rcd

and see if either one gives you a clue as to why it is erroring out.

Re: rcd refuses to start

Thanks for the tip!

Somehow Openwbem was running on that port. I _vaguely_ remember trying openwbem but can't say that I uninstalled.

Anyhoo....I killed the process and restarted rcd. Life is now very good!

Thanks, Brian

Excellent! We need an OES/Linux FAQ site for this stuff....

This looks like a good place to start:

I've seen those pages but it appears to be one article and not a
categorized list to branch off of with articles like the SuSE Wiki (
http://www.susewiki.org/ ).
