sloooooow disk write speeds

Single-server sight, maybe 10 people online at any one time, doing fairly
normal office stuff.

The client has VERRRY slow write speeds. Read speeds seem to be okay, but
write speeds are VERY slow. In fact, huge file moves / copies / saves are
soooo slow that many users have given up saving things to the server.

This situation survived an upgrade from NW6.0.2 to NW6.5.5a.

Worse yet, they've got mirrored IDE drives (Novell software RAID mirroring),
so I know we take a speed hit here. However, I've seen other servers
running that configuration, and it's not nearly this slow.

Config.txt is below.

Any ideas?

Tim Wohlford

; This is a sample of the slp configuration file.
; Two types of entries can be made: 1) DA entries, 2) SA Register Filters.
;
; The DA entry allows static configuration of a known DA. This would be
used
; when the DA was out of multicast range and DHCP was not being used to
; configure the DA.
; The static DA configuration format is as follows 'DA <addr type>,
<addr>'.
; The first word must be "DA". The addr type is the address type.
Currently, only
; IPV4 has been defined. IPV6 will be defined in the future. The addr is
; the address specified.
;
; The following is an example of a static DA.
; DA IPV4, 130.1.1.1
;
; The SA Register Filter would be used when the administrator wanted all
services
; of a specific service type being mapped to a single scope. For example,
; the administrator wanted all "lpr" printers being registered to scope
"printer".
; The format is as follows: 'REGISTER TYPE "<type name>" to SCOPE "<scope
name>"'.
; The parser will look for REGISTER, TYPE, and SCOPE as keywords followed
by quote on
; a single line. Example:
;
; REGISTER TYPE "lpr" to SCOPE "eng"
;
; The last line must contain a line feed and char return. A semi-colon
specifies a
; comment.

Re: sloooooow disk write speeds

Please Grab a copy of "NWCOPY" from the net someplace. (Easy to Find)

Use this tool to copy the data from one location on the server to
another and look to see how fast it copies. NWCopy use in "inserver"
copy function so that copied files would not hit the network wire like a
normal copy.

What you are seeing can sometimes be caused by network issues.
This is an easy way to test for that.

Also, try an IPX Connection to see if that is faster.
I have seen many cases in which if network problems exist that copies
one direction are much faster than the other.
Duplex Mismatches are the most common cause.
Ensure that the NIC and Switch port settings match.
Generally Auto-Auto is preferred while Fixed-Fixed should also normally
work. If one side is Auto and one side if fixed, there will be serious
issues.

Check both server and client settings.

The servers you have seen working "ok" with such a setup most certainly
had the mirrored drives connected to seperate channels of the IDE
controllers. Not so this one, the mirrored drives are Master/Slave on
the same controller. This *is* unbearably slow, no matter what.

Re: sloooooow disk write speeds

Massimo -

So I'll try moving that to another channel... maybe even try a better EIDE
card... thanks for the hint.

Re: sloooooow disk write speeds THE SOLUTION

Is there a way I can send you a beer?

Here's what I found out when I tore down that server:

1. Both IDE drives on same channel / cable
2. misconfigured jumpers
3. BIOS set for UDMA-33 (yes, 33)

So, I put the server together right this time (gotta talk to the tech who
deployed it) and it rocks now.

And Craig's suggestion that I download and use NWCopy deserves a beer too.

Thanks!
