there a way to direct certain devices to a address range

Is there a way to have dhcp assign certain device types, address from a certain range. example
ipods and phones use address range 1
workstations and laptops address range 2

Not if they are in the same collision domain. One way to do what you want
is to assign DHCP, based on MAC addresses.

Now, you might be on to something. Possibly classes could be used for that, depending how the clients identify themselves:

My original suggesting was to simply create a manual host entry so that mac x-x-x-x always gets address y-y-y-y

If you can find something to key off of that is unique to the client--some type of client identifier, then you can use classes as the previous person mentioned. If you review TIDS 7002606 and 7007009

Although the TIDs aren't examples of exactly what you are doing, they do give different examples of classes and how they can be used.
