updating zone 'acme.net/IN': Unsupported RR(255)

Hi All,

I had these oes2sp3 servers running fine. Then did the "rug up" and got the following messages piling up in /var/log/messages:
Oct 21 14:06:36 <hostname> [NCPL]: client 1.2.3.4#53: updating zone 'acme.net/IN': Unsupported RR(255): discarding

Setup according to TID: 3372644
only difference: There are two dhcp servers in load ballance mode.

Anyone has any good starting point from where to look? eg. what does this "Unsupported RR(255)" mean? I cant find it on the intertubes.

Thanks and have a great weekend!
Justin

Did you try to configure the zone for dynamic updates?

On NetWare, though it didn't always work well, it was easy to set up.
On Linux, you need to configure a TSIG key to basically control the
updates with a type of permission. Perhaps you have it trying to
update, but it doesn't have the permission configured correctly?

Hi Craig,

Well, i was not trying to configure DDNS, it was working 🙂 The update wrecked the configuration.
I didn't configure the DNS updates to use TSIG keys. Are they mandatory now? Maybe i could give that one a try.

Re: updating zone 'acme.net/IN': Unsupported RR(255)

It's been a while, so my recollection is a bit fuzzy....but I think I saw some of that kind of error a while back. Seems we finally figured out the IP addresses were from HP server ILO interfaces. It seems I had to get into those ILO configurations and make some kind of changes (like maybe tell them not to update DNS) to get the errors to go away. Sorry I can't recall more specifially, but I was putting out bigger fires at the time and didn't take any notes on it.

Actually, I thought it was always required to use TSIG keys for dynamic
DNS updates on OES2 Linux, or Linux in general.

Hi guys, update again.

Craig: The TSIG way is not mandatory so i'm not going to use them since setting DDNS up with TSIG-keys in OES2/iManager/dnsdhc-console should be considered a crime against humanity. ( e.g. Setting up iptables from the commandline might be a pain, but stuff is properly documented!!).

Anyway: I've done some packet tracing on the DNS port and could it be that there is a bug in the novell-named?
Because there comes a DNS update packet in, stating: COMPUTERNAME.ACME.NET: type ANY, class ANY
And then there goes a packet back to client stating: Flags: 0xa880 (Dynamic update response, No error)

But still in /var/log/messages:
Nov 7 12:22:42 lxmaster [NCPL]: client w.x.y.z#53: updating zone 'acme.net/IN': Unsupported RR(255): discarding

Shouldn't the DNS server answer with a message that something went wrong? Or am i missing something here?

I'm not sure what is going on there. Sounds like it thinks there is a
resource record option 255 (RR(255) being pushed that it doesn't like?
