(OBR) Support Tip: OBR Collection Service runs out of memory / stops collecting

Sometimes it becomes necessary to modify the Java options for the OBR Collection Service (HPE_PMDB_Platform_Collection). This is usually due to environmental reasons, number of nodes being polled and their responsiveness/volume of data etc.

An indication of the need to increase the heap could be:

- Collection stops or is incomplete
- The presence of the file {PMDB_HOME}/log/collection.hprof

Please refer to the OBR Troubleshooting Guide for modifying the Java arguments for the collection service to avoid OutOfMemory issues.

You can also increase the Java heap (-Xmx) but should you find this number has to be increased significantly (e.g. more than double the original value) you may need to reduce the Quartz (scheduled timer jobs) threads so that less collection process run in parallel.

You can change the thread count by modifying {PMDB_HOME}/config/ramscheduler.properties and reducing the value of org.quartz.threadPool.threadCount until you achieve a balance of:

- no OutOfMemory conditions
- collection completes well within the collection frequency

The re-configuration of these parameters should not be taken lightly. If you have any doubts please raise a support case and support will help tune the parameters.
