OMi 10 Service Auto-Discovery Policy Syntax

Jump to solution

Hi,

I'd like to know what a service auto-discovery policy does (in detail), but I can't find the documentation anywhere.

The online help only states:

Tip: Because of the complexity of the service auto-discovery policy XML, it is recommended that you copy and paste policy data from an existing discovery policy and modify it.

I noticed that some MP (e.g. Oracle) have huge SAD Policies - meaning hey had to modify it somehow. How?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi,

Alternative would be to go to

https://hpln.hp.com/group/bsm-community-content

Section Downloads

=> Operations Manager i

=> Monitoring

=> Policy Templates

Download the "Discovery Quickstart" package.

Included is a sample discovery policy, sample discovery scripts and a guide (which is identical to the blog referred to by Carol).

You can use scripts and policy as a starting point. The guide describes what you need to change and where and the sample scripts include also a few comments.

regards

Norbert

This blog article might provide some useful info:  https://hpln.hp.com/blog/agent-based-discovery-omi.  What I do is copy the apache discovery policy and only change the schedule for how frequently the policy runs and the script names for Windows/Unix.  Most of the work is in the script, since it need to output the required XML for the agent to send to the OMi server.  This requires some understanding of the CI Types and their mandatory attributes and valid types of relationships to other CITs of interest .  In the script, you produce XML that contains values for the attributes where the attribute name is ucmdb_<attributename>.

OK. So the example works correctly. However I'm having issues...

If I modify the example to create a dns_record, it still works, but when I want to create a http_context it doesn't work anymore. Probably something to do with http_context being abstract (can't instantiate it). That was just for example. Or I need to add relationships - which, how?

I want to instantiate My Site: under Application System -> My System -> My Site <*>.  (My System is also abstract).

I find it frustrating since can't find any documentation on the matter (for example google hpom_citype returns 5 results; where can the hpom_ types be seen?).

Also if you can point out which logs should be watched to debug (and if needed which log flags shoud be set, and where). I tried to watch /opt/HP/BSM/log/odb/odb but there are too many logfiles, and I can't see any relevant errors.

Thanks.

The content referenced by Norbert some years ago is now at https://marketplace.microfocus.com/itom/content/discovery-policy-template-omi

More recently, you can get some useful info on creating service auto-discovery polices in this blog:

https://community.softwaregrp.com/t5/IT-Operations-Management-ITOM/How-to-create-your-own-custom-topology-using-OMi-policies/ba-p/1496463#.Wt5xqa_rsb0

Basically, the approach has not changed, but the blog might provide some additional details.
