Hello,
In OML 9.XX it was possible to define an OA subagent, manually by editing some configuration files/policies (there was no UI for doing it). Ovc -status then reported the subagent and it you were also able to start/stop it. This way our SPI was always running and was entirely managed within the agent (no need to have extra services outside OA).
Is this still a viable option with OMi? If not, what's the alternative?
Best regards.

Generally speaking this is agent functionality (eg creating/managing registration files) which is independent of whether the mgmtsv is OM or OMi. The only proviso would be if your subagent depends on some server-side functionality - eg, custom policy type (technically possible with OML) - to do what it needs to do.
