SiteScope or BSM and Ganglia integration

Dear Experts,

We are currently using SiteScope 11.22 installed on RHEL.

We have some servers or applications that were meant to use high CPU utilization or memory and therefore it affects SiteScope from retrieving the metrics in a timely manner.

After talking to an HP representative, it seems like one of our SiteScope instances is consuming more memory that it is supposed to be. And my theory is that because we have some servers that are meant to use high CPU utilization or lots of resources.

The HP rep also mentioned that this can affect SiteScope monitoring other servers and wanted to test this theory by moving these group of servers to another SiteScope instance.

So basically that team is also using Ganglia to monitor these servers which is better suited than SiteScope for those specific servers/applications. However, we want everything to somehow go through SiteScope so that it makes it easier to see if there was an issue or not. The monitoring tool they are using is called Ganglia.

Has anyone integrated Ganglia with SiteScope or BSM?

If so has anyone have any documentation or explain to me how this can be possible?

Any advice on this is very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Ryu,

I have a suggestion for you , though I should admit i've never used this tool so not sure if this would quite work , stil I think it is a good start.

As far as I understood the Ganglia tool has an XML interface for reporting the measurements (http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/ganglia/wiki/Ganglia%203.1.x%20Installation%20and%20Configuration).

Maybe you could use an XML monitor to pick the xml results and process them using SiS.

I hope this helps, let me know what you think !

Thanks Yordan for the response.
I am trying to pick up some xml output data.
I have never used the XML monitor and not sure if i am implementing it correctly.
All I did was fill in the xml url field and tried getting counters.
It timed out.
I tried putting the xml url on my IE browser and it returns some xml code so I figured the xml url is correct.
Can someone please tell me how to use this xml monitor?

Any advice on this is very much appreciated.

You'll need a support contract with your SAID attached to your HP Passport to be able to see it.

Hi Ryu ,

It seems there is something with this XML. Tried to google this error , still not sure what could be it (http://goo.gl/a7p6Yn  you could check http://goo.gl/9ZZjUf , http://goo.gl/IpZ9Qd). Try opening the xml with a text editor and see if you find some special characters in some of the tags or if you want you could upload the xml in the post and I can check it out as well.

Hope this helps , wish you a nice day !

The above error is related to XML parasing. There is tag called METRIC NAME which has some wrong parameter, just correct or remove and try it. Or just attached here, so we can check.

So here is the attached xml file.

It is funny when I try to access the xml file via browser, then there is a break in the xml file.

However, when I log on to the console and telnet <hostname> 8651, then there is no break in the xml file.

Can someone please tell me how I can use the xml monitor to get metrics from Ganglia?

Or if anyone knows how to integrate SiteScope with Ganglia?

We would like to use Ganglia as the monitoring tool for a particular application and use SiteScope to alert as Ganglia does not have the alerting functionality.

There is plenty of documentation on integrating Nagios with Ganglia but i am having trouble finding documentation on integrating SiteScope with Ganglia.

Thanks,
