Can Operations Connector in HA mode work to receive SNMP traps?

Jump to solution

Hi OpsB Team

We are trying to implement Operations Connector (OpsCx) in High Availability mode according this page:

https://docs.microfocus.com/itom/Operations_Connector:2018.05/BSMC/bsmc_ha

We want to install two OpsCx node for this purpose.

We want  to use OpsCx for receiving SNMP traps from 20 SNMP agent nodes (mainly on Windows Server 2012 R2).

What is not clear for us is how SNMP agent nodes are configured to send events to OpsCx?

Is this configuration of SNMP agent done locally the node or is it done by OpsCx when deploying the policy?
How can a SNMP agent know it has to switch the data to send to secondary OpsCx host failover in OpsCx HA cluster?

Regards

Laurent

Yes use virtual IP or in other words cluster hostname.

For example if you had installed Ops Connector on below nodes,

10.27.100.260     opsx1.mydomain.com
10.27.100.261     opsx2.mydomain.com

and have virtual cluster hostname and IP like,

10.27.100.262     opsclust.mydomain.com

then pass SNMP traps to opsclust.mydomain.com on port 162 or whatever you prefer.

Make sure you had installed OA agent on both Ops Connector servers and deploy policies to the node.
Make sure opctrapi process is running on port 162 or whatever port you prefer.

Hope this makes sense.

Hi Laurent

We had installed Ops Connector on each NNM nodes along with OA agent and deployed OMI policies to OpS connector.

We had configured NNMi northbound connection to forward SNMP traps to NNM HA cluster hostname on port 10162

When NNM receives SNMP trap, it forwards the trap to NNM Cluster host on port 10162 and OA agent opctrapi process captures the trap and processes the trap and forwards it to OMI using OpS connector policies deployed.

Hope this helps to understand the process.

Hi Ramesh

To understand your architecture, it would mean you have a local integration of OpsCx? (Looking this page : https://docs.microfocus.com/itom/Operations_Connector:2018.05/BSMC/bsmc_overview).

It means the OpsCx cluster = NNM Cluster host in your case?

We don't have NNMi solution. We have hundred different devices which send potentially SNMP traps. We want to use OpsCx through a remote integration because we can't install locally OpsCx on the devices themselves.

Anyone know if we have to use a virtual hostname to address a remote OpsCx HA cluster?

Yes.

I would suggest you install OpsCx on standalone or Cluster servers(Active,Passive). Send SNMP traps to OpsCx stand-alone or to OpsCx virtual hostname(Cluster IP).

Create Connected server in OMI and deploy SNMP policies to OpsConnector.

Hi Ramesh.
We have two OpsCx nodes configured.

In Connected Servers menu, we have configured an OpsCx connection containing these 2 nodes following this page instruction:

https://docs.microfocus.com/itom/Operations_Connector:2018.05/BSMC/bsmc_config_connection

Now I follow your advice to get SNMP traps from third party to this cluster, does it mean we have to add a load balancer  (virtual IP) to route the traffic to these nodes?

If it is the case I notice a total lack of documentation of such deployment in OpsCx doc : https://docs.microfocus.com/itom/Operations_Connector:2018.05/Home

Thanks if someone or you can answer.

Thanks for this clarification Ramesh. I hope OpsCx documentation will be updated accordingly to specify this use case.
