(OMi) Support Tip: Topology synchronization from one OMi to another OMi.

There is a general misconception that "Forward dynamic topology" under Connected server setup when ticked/selected will synchronize the topology from one OMi server to another.

The right way to clone the topology from one OMi to another would be to utilize the "Data Flow Management" approach i.e., via Data flow probe . That way not just changes are forwarded but when you run the synchronization for the first time, the data in the source RTSM is forwarded to the target RTSM entirely.

Hi Maheshwari,

Thanks for sharing this information!

However, as per the below snippet from Operations Manager i documentation, one can also use the forward dynamic topology option to sync topology from one OMi to other OMi instance.

"Topology Forwarding

For CI resolution to be identical on the target and the source OMi server, the same topology data should exist on both servers. This enables OMi to relate the same event to the same CI on both servers. Depending on your environment, consider the following topology forwarding methods:

• Use Data Flow Management to set up an RTSM integration between the source and the target OMi server. When you run the synchronization for the first time, the data in the source RTSM is forwarded to the target RTSM. Subsequent synchronizations may be faster because of the smaller number of CIs to be synchronized. You can also schedule the synchronization to take place at regular intervals.

The advantage of using RTSM synchronization is that all CIs are synchronized, even manually added CIs or CIs added by other OMi applications. The synchronization, however, only takes place when scheduled, not whenever a new CI is added to the configuration.

• Use OMi topology forwarding to forward any topology that an OMi source server receives through topology synchronization to a target server.

OMi topology forwarding is dynamic. As soon as a server receives CI updates through topology synchronization, it forwards the updated topology to the connected server that has the Forward Dynamic Topology to this Target Server check box selected. However, manually added CIs or CIs added by other OMi applications are not forwarded."

Thanks & Regards,

Mayur

This is a documentation bug that is supposed to be fixed.

Re: (OMi) Support Tip: Topology synchronization from one OMi to another OMi.

So the best approach for topology synchronization is to use DFP for full topo sync and forward dynamic topology option for delta sync? or not to use dynamic topology sync at all?

Thanks,

Mayur

Re: (OMi) Support Tip: Topology synchronization from one OMi to another OMi.

Just forget about this dynamic toposync completely as long as you talk about topology sync between two OMi instances. For OMi to OMi topology sync DFP is the one and only way to go.
