Re: Dell EqualLogic

we just installed one - SATA based, 16 spindles, about 6TB with RAID5e; for use with ESX. So far performance looks good, as good as DASD - but we've still in the testing phase.

Re: Dell EqualLogic

We have 'em. They're doing great considering we gave 2TB to a single VM
server.

Yes I have one. Have a couple of Netware boxes, couple of Windows Box
and two ESX boxes hooked to it. Perfomance is great. Easy to manage.
I guess the only downside would be if it didn't have a feature you were
looking for.

When it was Equalogic it was okay.

Don't know if Dell will murder it like they did the Clarion (I think)
with EMC

Re: Dell EqualLogic

I have one of those... (Dell/Clarion AX150). Seems to do the job well for me.

Nevermind. I talked to dell and they managed to price themselves right
out of my budget. 2.4tb SAS (15k) dual controllers half the drive space
filled was only a mere $45,000. Lefthand 4.8tb sas starter was $30,000.

Depending on your requirements, you might want to look at the HP
MSA2012i - I did some testing on it, really liked it, and you can't
argue with the price. Have a client using one - and it is quick, even
with SATA drives, with SAS it's even better.

Dell came in cheaper than all the others I looked at but Dell gives
educational customers a pretty good discount.

The other thing to consider about Equalogic is that all the "tools" are
included. They don't sell you a box and then charge extra for the
management pieces. Make sure you take that into consideration when you
compare prices.

Heck we bought the FC version with dual enhanced controllers, the
2212fc, with SAS drives yet we still paid less than what Matthew was
quoted for the Dell & LeftHand solutions.

What's funny is that I think we've had this conversation before. Many
times. Yet Matthew keeps ignoring the HP for some reason. 🙂

Not ignoring HP at all. I am just in the investigation phase. Looking
at all my options. Lefthand is owned by HP by the way. 🙂

One of the things I'm also looking at is putting a second unit in
another building for disaster recovery. Lefthand has the starter pack
which is about $30000 for two nodes (4.8tb total 15k sas) and that
includes all the software.

However, if it bothers you all that I keep asking about different
storage solution and what not I will stop. I value the opinions of the
people here (hence why I keep asking), but the solution that worked best
for some might not be the best solution for me. I always appreciate the
help I receive here, but more often than not it seems that I just annoy
people here.

Believe me when I say that I appreciate sarcasm and humor as much as the
next person. Sometimes the true meaning of a statement is lost in text
because it last expression and emotion, but sometimes I think the Novell
forum is getting a bit negative. Then again maybe it truly is just me.
Maybe I'm just not seeing how annoying I am or maybe I'm being overly
sensitive.

I know that probably sounds like I'm sitting here upset or something
like that. I'm not at all. I'm having an excellent day and I'm in a
really good mood.

No need to stop. Just noted that it seems like you've asked about the
same solutions over and over. People's opinions here aren't going to
change all that much, so when they tell you once how they like a product
chances are that opinion won't change drastically over time. 🙂

I know, looks like HP wanted to expand their storage options.

The MSA2012i we were looking at was well under $20K with either 12TB of
SATA or 5.4TB 15K SAS (Raw capacity). However, if you're looking at SAN
Mirroring for DR, there will be other software costs depending on your
requirements.

Doesn't bother me in the least, just busting on ya 😄

Me too - it's Friday, at the end of not so great week.

When did they buy LeftHand? When we looked into this stuff a year or so
ago I don't think HP owned them yet.
