Like many, I've have my stories for both... but right now I prefer UPS.
Why? A couple of years ago I did a lot of Internet Christmas shopping.
Some of it into early December. So I chose Fed Ex to make sure I got
the package in time. I wasn't home one day when Fed Ex came to deliver,
so they left a note on my door. It was a normal shipping note that was
hand written. It said: We were unable to locate your address. Please
pick up... etc...

They told me where their distribution point was and I HAD to come down
and pick the package up... sigh. I told them I wanted a Fed Ex hat,
they said NO. 😞

Another time, I was reviewing some equipment for a major computer
manufacturer. No notice, nothing... eventually Fed Ex shipped the
package BACK to the vendor who had to EAT the shipping cost.

Btw, I live in well established easy to access suburb of Dallas (UPS
doesn't have a problem finding me or the thousands of neighbors around
me).

Sigh.... Fed Ex... NOTHING guaranteed. I talked to them a long time
about the computer shipment and the fact that Fed Ex essentially was
DOUBLE billing the vendor for THEIR mistake. They pointed me to a VERY
long path of red tape and trouble to which the vendor could plead their
case and hope... since >99.9999% of those customers WILL not dispute, I
told them they needed to do better. To be honest, Fed Ex didn't seem to
care.

Yes

haha

I've been back and forth to be honest. Right now, I prefer FedEx because (for me) their rates are cheaper for Home Delivery. (I've got an Amex OPEN account, so I get an extra discount).

Re: Fedex or UPS

I find UPS to be more consistent. I've not had the same experience with
FedEx as you have, but I've had stuff delivered to me via fed ex from
the same place. Sometimes I get it in a week and sometimes in two days.
UPS on the other hand always had it to me in three days.

Re: Fedex or UPS

I had the same thing-ish with Fedup and a wine delivery....adult over 21 had
to be home to sign. They attempted, of course, the same time every work day
(2:00PM) when we work. Duh.

Go to the depot and everyone is lined up for miles with their little slips
in hand. The man at the counter couldn't find anything for anyone (except
me, the wine was found). Lots of angry X-mas folks crowded in there.

I left the depot thinking the USPS gets a bad rap...Fedex is just as
inefficient. 🙂

Re: Fedex or UPS

I was talking to my UPS driver about how they say Fedex (UPS) are
bellwethers for economic lifesigns...so we got to talking about business.
He mentioned Fedex's purchase of Kinko's as one of their mistakes.

I thought about it....doesn't that seem really stupid in hindsight? Does
anyone use Kinkos anymore, or a copy store at all? Don't most have copiers
at their disposal and not want to spend a boatload on a stupid copy?

What were they thinking?

They were geniuses. I can never find a parking place at my nearest
Kinkos. The line is generally out the door and lord help you if you
need something really fast.

Re: Fedex or UPS

I like the way FedEx handles my boxes, but the UPS guy is friendlier.

FedEx have by /far/ the cooler logo. Apart from that, not much to
choose between them I find; I've had irritations and pleasant surprises
from all the couriers I've used...

Re: Fedex or UPS

Craig:

For those who need more than just a few pages copied, they're still
very necessary. Think more along the lines of larger copying needs.
For instance, Kinko's usually does the copying of all of the BrainShare
handouts. There are thousands of those. Considering employee time at
the copier, I'm sure Kinko's is a better bargain than doing that "in
house." That's where Kinko's comes in handy. : )

I don't think I've ever had a problem with either of them. : )

Re: Fedex or UPS

I have had much better service from UPS. I always figured it was because my name is DOWNS that they like to be the opposite. <g>

FedEx service has been horrible. Once I had a parts supplier (whose name I won't mention) accidentally ship a replacement hard drive (for one that failed) to my home instead of the customer site. I noticed it as soon as I got the shipment confirmation. I called the supplier, they told me to call FedEx. FedEx said they'd "flag" the shipment so when it got to Madison it would route it to a holding bin so they would grab it and hold it at the counter for me and NOT load it on the truck.

I drove across town to the FedEx office about 11 am, only to be told that they loaded it on the truck and were in the process of delivering it to my house. "Oh, wait - I just got confirmation that they delivered it to (reading off my home address)." GRrrr!!! So I then made the 2 hour round-trip to pick it up at my house. My customer was NOT happy, but I managed to get the supplier to credit him for the shipping charges. Frankly I think some of it should have been credited from FedEx also.

Re: Fedex or UPS

Seems like many go with printshops for that....I guess Kinkos could do it
too.
