Re: Gartner pundit: "Will VMware become the next Novell?"

I slightly disagree with #2. WSS 3.0 is free, and that's why Sharepoint is "dominating" (yes, the OS it sits on is not free, but the product itself is). MS gets WSS 3.0 in the door, people love it, and then they manage to snag you with Office 2007 and/or Exchange 2007 and at that point you almost "have to" buy the MOSS version of Sharepoint and pay through the nose.

Although I also disagree that OpenOffice is "good enough" when it mangles Office docs in the conversion process.

But your other points are very interesting and seem to negate the "good enough" argument (ie, good enough isn't winning out). Probably because, as you pointed out, the MS lock on stuff that they have (and people don't seem to care that they get locked into a single vendor solution).

It should be changed to "good enough and bundled with M$" is what people run
to.

Lantastic did fade after Windows offered "good enough" P2P, and modem
sharing software went away too. That formula seems consistent.

Ooh, I like that combination (well in the sense that it seems to ring true)
