Google maps 2.0

It now has location capabilities via cell phone tower triangulation. No
need for GPS. Not as acurate but close enough to use when searching for
the nearest Best Buy, etc.

Looks like it may not work for Palm?

Well when I go there with my Treo there's a link to download Google Maps
2.0 but when I download & install it it's still 1.2.

Their forums have a thread about this. Officially they don't support Palm
OS. Yet for some reason when browsing there from a Palm the page
mistakenly says 2.0 is available. So far they seem to be ignoring all
posts asking why the page says it's available if it actually isn't.

Bummer. You might want to try again in a few days. I had difficulty
downloading it at first. After a few tries, I was able to get it to
download completely. I wonder if they were swamped with people trying
to download. They may not have updated all the mirror download sites.

Appearantly they also have it available so if you are a BES admin you
can download the file seperately so you can push it out to the
Blackberries but I couldn't get that to work at all.

Hi folks,

GMM 2.0 with My Location (beta) features works with the following:

* BlackBerry devices
* Some recent Motorola devices
* Some recent Sony Ericsson devices
* Many Windows Mobile devices
* Nokia Series 60 3rd Edition devices

At this time, it is not available for Palm Treo devices or the Apple
iPhone.

Thanks,
Mobile Guide

Re: Google maps 2.0

Nice! I had been running 1.6, but I like the smaller fonts on my BB, and
while I do have a bluetooth GPS, it's nice to have an approximate idea of
where I am when the GPS signal is too weak or Bluetooth is acting flaky.
The switch from cell tower positioning to GPS and back is nice as well.

Hotsync is screwed up on my machine at home so I can't test, but looking
at the size of the download from the page the PRC appears the same size
as the one I've downloaded OTA which is still 1.2.

Basically they have incorrect info on their website and for some reason
they refuse to correct it.

Exactly. I have a usb gps that I use with the laptop but that takes
setup time. It's nice to just pull out the Blackberry, hit 0 and then
search for something and have it know approximately where you are.
