HD mirror set

How long should it take (realistically) for a mirror set made of 36.4GB
(10k) u320 HDs to synch on a 2.8GHz server w/ 2GB of RAM?

server speed/ram shouldn't affect it should it? isn't the RAID controller doing
all the work?

How many disks in the mirror? How much data? What OS? What RAID card?
How much disk I/O load is there?

Prolly an hour or less in most cases, but you see there are a lot of
variables.

That's what I thought, but not so sure anymore. It's not a true RAID
controller, it's an onboard LSI card in an ibm x345.

So it not synching overnight is not a good thing, right? (Kind of a
rhetorical question, or sarcastic, however you want to read it <G>)

Re: HD mirror set

Like everyone said, lots of variables. Off the top of my head is "rebuild
priority."

There are some variables -- such as other concurrent disk activity --
recently I did that on a 4.2 server (a few times as I was replacing
drives), took about 10 hours. Eventually with replaced 72G drives the
last mirror took 18 hours or so. (home brew 4.2 server with U160 TekRAM
-- which uses an LSI chipset).

Re: HD mirror set

Steve, if it doesn't complete sync in say 10 to 12 hours (do you get a
per cent complete report), it may be that you have a drive that is
getting a case of the 'not happies'.

Re: HD mirror set

That's the big one (rebuild priority/rate) that we've run into.

Also if the OS is live there are some softwares that cause the mirror
process to restart over and over and over. It will never complete in
that case.

Haven't seen that with NetWare though.
