Memory Stick.

On some XP PCs I see the following happening.
User plugs in a memory stick.
It shows up ok and the user can use it.
A while later the user opens My Computer and tries to open the memory stick
and XP pops up a box "Open With.. Choose the program you want to use to open
this file"
If the user browses to C:\windows\explorer.exe it will open but the tick box
"always use the selected program to open this file".
Is there a fix?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Probably really good advice, as Arthur posts here all the time with one
Windows XP problem after another!

Re: Memory Stick.

Get a Mac!

What is the issue with the tick box? Is it greyed out?

One of our desktop engineers had this exact problem a while back, and it
turned out to be a virus. I'll see if I can find out its name.

Colleague's reply:

"The name varies.. usually transferred by usb key.

Below explains what might be happening for the c drive "open with" you
are seeing.

Normally when a virus infects a windows system which causes a drive
opening problem, it automatically creates a file named autorun.inf in
the root directory of each drive.

This autorun.inf file is a read only ,hidden and a system file and the
folder option is also disabled by the virus. This is deliberately done
by the virus in order to protect itself. autorun.inf initiates all the
activities that the virus performs when you try to open any drive.

You have to just delete this file and restart your system to correct
this problem.

You may need to change the pretermissions on the autorun.inf file. try
the command below.

attrib -r -h -s autorun.inf"

Re: Memory Stick.

Thank you. Deleting the autorun.inf from the memory stick fixed the
problem.
