NCCIrregulars on Facebook!

For those who have not been sucked in yet, there's an NCCI Facebook
group that we've had for some time, that Facebook finally migrated to
its new format. About 2 minutes after it went "Live" in the new format,
there were 76 members.

Susan sounds like they 'said':

So my response to Susan's comment is...

Good lord! Had to turn off email notifications for that group, forgot
about the plethora of emails after joining a group.

I'm not too happy about finding myself spammed with emails this morning. I have a problem with:

1. The fact that Facebook allows people to add other people to a group without asking

2. That people of the NCC facebook group actively use this feature

3. that my membership is such that I get email notifications for each message posted

4. that I can't at the moment turn this off because I have no facebook access from work.

So please people, don't just use any facebook feature that exists. Do have the politeness to ask people before adding them to a group.
Because of this, I would politely ask the group administrators to once again remove me from the group.

Also, I wish Facebook would remove this functionality. This is already the second time someone added me to a group without asking. Generally, such behaviour is a primary motivation for me to not want to be part of such a group. I don't want to be seen as part of a community which imposes itself upon others without asking.

I actually had to turn off email notifications for ALL groups on my bird
Facebook account. It has something like 3000 friends, and people are constantly
adding the account to groups. I was getting testy <g>.

To be fair, most people assume they are "inviting" to a group, and don't really
realize that it is a spambot!

Re: NCCIrregulars on Facebook!

I must have already turned off all my facebook email notifications
because I was added by Danita, but I wasn't spammed. Though this case
didn't bother me, I am surprised and somewhat displeased to know that
any 'friend' can add me to any group without my permission. I would
think an invite to join would be more appropriate. Oh well, Facebook
is free to use...or not....and if I don't like it, I don't have to use
it so I figure I don't have much right to complain.

This was the original way it worked. When they moved to the "new group" format,
it became a case of someone created a group, and you were just a member. I
think FB is trying to equate this as something on the lines of email groups. I
might have my own email groups that I add you to whether you know about it or
not, and when I email to that group, it goes to all recipients. Then folks
"reply to all" and it goes back to everyone, etc. You can ask me to take you
off my email list, but I didn't need your permission to put you there in the
first place.

I think the real problem with Facebook overall is that it has a tendency to add
new features, change features and delete features without any notice or
information about how these features work.

Makes sense. Nobody asked me if I wanted to be added to the local phone
directory either and I survived. I'm not going to commit suicide
because of it.

Re: NCCIrregulars on Facebook!

Marcel:

As Danita has pointed out, those inviting others likely were unaware it
wasn't just an invitation that needed approval. I didn't know that. The
last I dealt with a group, you were asked to join and had to accept.

I've now changed the settings for the group to where anyone can invite
someone, but approval requires an admin. That's the best that can be
done, apparently.

And someone has already removed you from the group, so you're no longer
a member.

Re: NCCIrregulars on Facebook!

Oh, and be assured that if someone adds you again, I'll reject the move
and not approve it, and ask the other admin to do the same.
