New desktop for the wife

My wife has a decent laptop, but she wants a new desktop as the one she's using is quite old. She is into genalogy so usually has multiple browser windows open at the same time along with a genealogy application and graphics application. Not heavy duty stuff.

I've always liked Dell machines as I've had many and have never had any hint of a serious problem with one or the components inside. Dell has what looks like a nice Inspiron desktop on their cyber monday deals: 7th generation I5 with 12GB ram and a 1TB drive for US$399. Seems reasonable to me. Here's their flier. Any other suggestions or comments? I've never had an Inspiron machine. 12GB ram is probably a little overkill but that way she can have lots of browser windows open. There's just something in her genes that keeps her from closing windows. 🙂

HP also has a decent deal on a similar machine for $479 which is still a decent price if I can't get the one at Dell (limited quantities).

Anyone else getting new hardware for the holidays?

Hi
What are the specs of the existing Desktop, Monitor etc?

Hmm decent laptop (specs?), why not hook get an external monitor and
just use one system?

I've pretty much converted to laptops and qsynergy to get from one to
the other...one keyboard and mouse also run a couple of 1680x1050
screens via hdmi -> dvi all the laptops and RPI's consume less power
than the desktop system I use...

When we talk about "desktop" systems, many of us still think of the
traditional tower. If that's too bulky, we may look to a
laptop/notebook instead as our desktop system but there are
alternatives.

Notebooks offer portability. If you need that, that's the route to go
but there are tradeoffs. Most people, when using a notebook as a
desktop computer, want a larger screen and better keyboard so these end
up being extra cost items. Notebooks are primarily battery operated
devices designed with a specific power envelop in mind. There is a
tradeoff between performance and battery life so notebooks typically
have lower power processors and limited RAM.

The alternative is the small form factor "mini" or "tiny" PC. Most of
the major manufacturers offer models in this form factor but the best
well known is the probably the Intel NUC.
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/boards-kits/nuc.html

When compared with a notebook, these PCs provide a much wider choice of
processor, memory, and storage. Since they don't include a built-in
keyboard and display, the form factor is much smaller than that of a
notebook. Also, why pay for a built-in keyboard and display if you are
going to use external ones anyways?

In any case, it's something to consider.

Hey malcolmlewis:

I tried to sell her on the idea, but she wants a desktop. She likes the
ergonomic keyboard and two identical monitors. I told her I could do that with
her laptop, but nope, she's set in her ways.

>What are the specs of the existing Desktop

It's old and dying. I don't remember which AMD cpu it has but the PC is about
8 years old. The integrated video card has been giving us grief (not
recognizing the 2nd monitor, etc) for months now, and two weeks go it wont'
even recognize either monitor and only displays 1024x768. I suspect a memory
issue too as it hangs from time to time.

I'm hoping to get a Dell Door buster today as it's Cyber Monday. $399 for an
Inspiron 7th generation I5, 12GB ram, and 1TB drive. If not, HP has one with
similar specs for $479

Re: New desktop for the wife

The size doesn't really matter. She's got a slot for it that fits a tower and
a tower gives her lots of USB ports etc. which she puts to good use.

Bought it. The "deal" was completely sold out within 90 seconds. I'm glad I
had my finger on the button. Regular price US$699. It should be here Nov
30th. That should keep the wife computer satisfied for a couple of years.

Very glad you go it! She's going to be very happy with that and her
dual monitors, doing genealogy. I speak from experience! 🙂

Re: New desktop for the wife

Yup. She uses lots of windows. To sweeten the deal, Dell was offering 15% on
Ebates so I got a $60 rebate on my $399 purchase. Not bad.
