RE Messages

I'm using Thunderbird to view the newsgroups. I've also tried Outlook
Express. When the messages are downloaded they often start with what
seems to be replies rather than the full thread. That is the original
post that started the thread is not shown. Why is this?

It's because you're not using XANANEWS the best most complete news
browser in the universe!

Depends on how old the OP is. If it's old enough your newsreader may not
download them or they may not even exist in the server anymore.

the rplies are ferther back then you are downloading....It has been
years since I used thunderbird, I like xananews better...

In addition to what the others have said, it's a configurable setting in
most news readers to download x number of messages or until x days ago. If
you download a reply but don't download the parent message as it's older
than your setting, the reply will show up as a root message, at least in a
hierarchical view. If you want to get older messages, generally the
easiest way to do it is to unsubscribe from the forum, change the setting,
and resubscribe.
