We've had issues w/ a couple of our servers where the memory was
solidly seated, but machines were acting *very* strange. When the
memory was removed & reseated, the problems went away.

Re: System Problems

Problem solved. What worked was unplugging the SATA drive, trying to
boot to CD (unsuccessful), shutting it down, plugging the SATA back in,
and then booting again.

The SATA cable was absolutely plugged in properly all along and hadn't
come loose.

An odd thing like this happened on another system, once. I hadn't
remembered it until after the system started up again. On that other
system, after having to hard reboot once, suddenly the SATA drive
wouldn't come up. In the trouble-shooting, the SATA cable was checked
to make sure it was in securely, and it was. Then when it still didn't
boot, the SATA drive was unplugged, the system booted with another hard
drive that worked, shut down, and then the other drive unplugged and
the SATA drive plugged back in, started up and then it worked again.

Very odd. : )

Re: System Problems

Boot off the CD and do a repair with out a recovery disk. This will take
you to a DOS prompt. I've had this happen a few times on various systems in
the past, "fixmbr" and "fixboot" will usually clear these problems up. Best
part is that it's completely harmless.

Re: System Problems

I've found that if I use DeOoxIT

Home - CAIG Laboratories, Inc.

right off the bat (when a box starts to act strange) the problems go away.

If I use the product when building the box, I rarely get flaky startups.

Oh.. and you can buy the stuff at Radio Shack.
