What if GroupWise could use AD?

Just stirring up the hornets nest.

Let's say hypothetically speaking:

What if Novell changed Groupwise so that it could use AD in addition to eDir? (I'm not going to get into the how much effort it would be, etc.)

Just a what if.

Does anyone think it would help organizations either:

a) Keep groupwise (instead of migrating to Exchange)
or
b) Get new customers?

Just a thought and just curious to see what the other opinions are.

Re: What if GroupWise could use AD?

Isnt ZCM10 "directory agnostic"? Why not grpwise, besides, grpwise isnt all
that tightly tied to edir in the first place eh?

Re: What if GroupWise could use AD?

What if OpenLDAP was the directory that everybody used. No more AD or eDir.

Then trees would be a lot smaller, the openLDAP server doesn't scale the
way eDir does.

What if eDir was open sourced and became the defacto standard for all
servers or anything needing a directly service.

It wouldn't matter. Nobody considers the directory when it comes to
groupwise. Almost all migrations are caused by lack of integration with
other applications, or by end user experiences. You'll have a CXO
mandate it because "everybody" uses outlook. Nobody is out there saying
we love GW but we have to leave it because it's not AD.

Re: What if GroupWise could use AD?

What if Novell bundled the Groupwise Identity Manager driver as part of
Groupwise, so that you would barely ever have to touch eDirectory (once
drivers are setup) if you are (or are headed toward being) not currently an
eDir shop? This would cover AD, OpenLDAP, etc.

What if they just lowered the cost of Groupwise so that it was half the
price of an exchange install. Better yet, why not just give groupwise
away and just charge for support. What if unicorns were real and could
make us all happy. What if there really was gold at then end of the
rainbow. What if what if'ing really made a difference. =D

We've had that discussion in here before. eDir uses licensed technology
from RSA Data Security and as such cannot be open sourced.

Oh, and while I absolutely *love* eDir, just open sourcing something
doesn't make it the defacto standard. For a case in point, let's look at
OpenOffice. 🙂

Or a CXO mandate that says "Outlook is what I'm used to, so we're moving
to Exchange". I had that happen once.

Re: What if GroupWise could use AD?

I thought I heard GW8 would work with any LDAP backend, not just eDir.

Not that AD actually follows LDAP rules, though...
