XP Pro problem

I'm a bit perplexed.

Old box that passes all motherboard diags, disk drive diags. Fdisked
and installed XP Pro. Reboot and it stalls. Error reading disk, press
ctrl, alt and del

The drive is set to active. Known good install CD. I've tried different
install disks. Slipstreamed SP3 onto install cd. Same problem.

NTLDR and Boot ini are good.

I'm perplexed.

Suggestions?

Re: XP Pro problem

I've had problems with XP Pro and too small of cache on the DVD drive
(typical of the old DVD drives). The install appeared to go just fine
but in truth there were errors (apparently because the install process
had to wait for the DVD). I substituted a more current DVD drive with
larger cache and all worked well. Then I put the old one back in after
all was working.

Just a thought.

Bob

But you can run a live cd of a linux variant and check the drive? What
about the drive manufacturer, they should have some form of bootable
media to check the drive?

I think Bob might be onto something there.

Sewermonger, try making two partitions and on partition two copy the xp
cd and use the boot floppies? It has been ages since I did this but I
think it can work.
