Adding portlet to project overview page

We have a issue where we need to add a portlet to project overview page to all existing projects when the project type is modified the new portlet is visible only for new projects but not existing ones , we have close to 2000 projects adding manually to all projects will be a tedious task , is there a way this can be added automatically to all projects of that particular project type

There is a workaround by making the a change in project setting under project overview layout but we also need to have this option editable for PMs so this is not a 100% solution

Any ideas will be of great help

Hi Vinay,

This post has its place on the PPM Community Forum, but not on Idea Exchange.

This is not an idea, more like a problem with no clear proposal on how it could be implemented. The problem is that there is no easy way to implement a solution like that: Currently, you either give control to PMs to edit their Project Dashboard - and the dashboard is copied upon project creation and then live its life with the project - or you prevent Project Managers to modify the Dashboard, and any change made to the project type's Dashboard gets synch'ed to the projects'.

You can't have the bread and eat it - because expecting to propagate changes of the project type to projects where PMs can edit the Dashboard means that you would have to reconcile conflicts, which is NOT a trivial problem at all. What if a PM changed a portlet preference in their project, but that the same preference gets changed in the project type? Who gets priority? What if a new Portlet get created in Project Type in between two other portlets but that a PM modified their Dashboard so much that there's no way to figure out where the new portlet should be inserted in their dashboard?

You may look at these examples and think that there's always a way to make arbitrary decisions on how these conflicts should be resolved - for example, settings of projects get priority, and add portlet at the bottom of the dashboard if you can't figure out where  else to put it - . Unfortunately, that's where different customers will come up with different opinions about what the right decision should be, each with valid arguments, but with no clear consensus. This is the kind of idea that's likely to result in more harm than good in the end. Of course, I would love to have someone change my mind on this topic if they can come up with good arguments. If that happens I'll eventually open the idea to votes - but that will happen only if a real solution proposal is provided, and not just a problem with no specific guidance on how to solve it in a way that won't create problems and frustration.
