Any ideas on how to troubleshoot periodic failed SMTP delivery messages from PPM?

We have been using PPM for many years.  Within the past month we started receiving failed delivery messages in Lotus Notes.  We are sending notifications from PPM to a SMTP server, which forwards to our Notes servers.  All mail is internal.   All notifications are being sent from workflow steps.   We are receiving failed messages on random workflows & workflow steps.   I cannot find any common link between the failures.   We checked with our internal email team and they couldn't find anything wrong.  In fact, they found the messages were successfully delivered.   Has anyone experienced similar issues / or know how to troubleshoot this from PPM?    I have checked the knta_notif_txn_details but cant seem to find anything.  The message we receive in Notes is "Returned Mail from HP Project and Portfolio Management"  Unable to send the following message to: ......    When notifications are sent from PPM to SMTP, is there any confirmation back to PPM?   I didn't think there was with SMTP.

In case if any issue is encountered in STMP server, then those error logs are capture in SERVER log file.

Along with this also check the "Notification History Report" to view the trigger and delivery detials.

If no error is found then there might be issue in your Notes Server.

I'm having this issue now.

What is the default path to the server log file?

Thanks,

Hi TomB,

You can find it like this path:

[PPM_HOME]/server/kintana/log/serverLog.txt

Nothing is being recorded in the logs.

We have had this issue as well. It was very frustrating, because we found no errors anywhere. In fact, it even looked like they had been sent.

It turned out to be due to non-standard (outside of A-z) characters in those notifications. They are part of our language and we use those characters in mails every day, so one would think it ought to work, but it did not.

Cheers,

/Chris

This is still an issue for us. There aren't any non-standard characters in the notification.

What else can I look at?

Re: Any ideas on how to troubleshoot periodic failed SMTP delivery messages from PPM?

I tried bouncing the notification service, and it worked! The users who weren't receiving their notifications are now receiving them.

We are still seeing error emails, though. Users are receiving their notifications, but the system is still sending out emails that say, "Unable to send the following message to:..."

What could be causing PPM to send failure notifications when emails are actually being received?

Thanks in advance.

Well,

We're back to users not getting email notifications, not everyone, though. Only some people are not getting their notifications, no special characters involved.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Re: Any ideas on how to troubleshoot periodic failed SMTP delivery messages from PPM?

I can think a few reasons:

1) Their email addresses are not registered in PPM
2) They are not in the recipient list or not in the security group that should get those emails.
3) Somewhat related to email servers, like spam or mail client rules that direct ppm mails to somewhere else.
