How to reset a DATE field on a request type to null

I am trying to create a new request type rule that will reset a DATE field to null (blank) when certain criteria are met.

I have tried using the SQL Default query "SELECT '-','-' FROM DUAL" which sets the date field to Nov 30 1899.  Unforunately, the request accepts this value when the form is submitted.

Is there some way to force the field to reset to null?...which would then force the user to enter a new value before submitted the request?

This works fine:

SELECT null, null from dual

Thanks!...I must have used the incorrect syntax on my first attempt
