HP ALM Application upgrade from 12.53 to 12.55 and DB Server upgrade from SQL'08 to SQL'16

We are in the process of upgrading ALM and the DB server.

Below is the brief Process Checklist that we have come up with. Please sugest if this is the best approach or any new approach to help improve.

  1. Deactivate Project in ALM 1253  Siteadmin
  2. Migrate all Data from old DB server into the new DB Server
  3. Perform Application Upgrade to ALM 12.55 in App Server and update DB Server in installation window
  4. Update the new DB name in all projects dbid.xml
  5. Upgrade Project in Siteadmin
  6. Reactivate Project

Hi,
According to KM02972259.
From ALM 12.5x : You do not need to upgrade ALM 12.5x projects to ALM 12.55. You can install ALM 12.55 and start working on your ALM 12.5x projects right away.

You dont have to edit the dbid files of all the project, you can just verify, repair and upgrade projects since the migration is from 12.xx to 12.xx

Re: HP ALM Application upgrade from 12.53 to 12.55 and DB Server upgrade from SQL'08 to SQL'16

Thank you Srihari and Veeru,

We have around 1800+ Active projects in our ALM, and we have to complete the DB server migration over teh weekend.

Updating dbid.xml files for each project is time consuming, is there anyother efficient way to handly the DB server change.

Re: HP ALM Application upgrade from 12.53 to 12.55 and DB Server upgrade from SQL'08 to SQL'16

Hi Nandy,

In Dev environment, take any single project for experimentation ,try updating DB related strings of that project in Site Admin PROJECTS table and see whether those changes are reflecting in that project's dbid.xml file.

If above workaround doesnt fulfil the purpose, then writing VBA code to automate this dbid.xml files updation task will be useful. Primarily we can use Windows filesystem objects to operate on folders and files.

After you connect alm 12.55 to new DB , create a dummy project and use that dummy project's dbid.xml file as reference.

In case if your new database server have multiple clusters then create dummy projects pointing to each of the cluster and have their associated dbid.xml files as well.

To the program provide input like "project name","project DB name","project repository location","DB cluster" , based on this input, VBA code should perform below
1) open to the "project repository location" on the application server.
2) rename the available dbid.xml as dbid_old.xml
3) copy the reference dbid.xml file of dummy project to this "project repository location"
4) update the project name , project repository path, DB name , DB constant with DB cluster on to the reference dbid.xml

Make sure that you are having correct values for PPT, versioning and smart conversion status etc.

Loop through all 1k plus project names and project repositories and repeat the above steps.

Also try to explore on ALM ROBOT tool and see if it will be helpful in your case.
