Dynamically Change VDF?

We have some aux table data that we plan on showing in a multi-selection control. The current value display format is set as follows:

{Col1} - {Col2}

Is it possible to change the value display format dynamically? (ie - with some Javascript or form action)

Given an additional form control that may be chosen, we may like the value display format to look like:

{Col3} - {Col1}

or even

{Col2} - {Col3}

I'm foreseeing potential issues with not only the fact that the value display format is a table property or attribute, but perhaps also with some possible control event driven issues. For example, there are no values in a multi-selection control until the user clicks the find button, and therefore the value display format may not be initially available to work with dynamically.

Does anyone have any experience with such a request that could help shed some light on this topic?

Hi Robert, it is a limitation of the product that the VDF is an attribute of the underlying table rather than being changable by context. We are looking at ways we can change that, but that won't happen in the short term. However, there are some other approaches you might be able to take to address this. For a single relational field, you might construct the record using sub-relational fields pointing into the aux table. You could use JavaScript to do the concatenation and hide the subrelational fields.

If you can wait until SBM 10.1.2 is out, there will be a couple of new Composer features that might help meet your requirements. In 10.1.2, you will be able to directly embed a listing report defined in Composer on a custom form. This way, you can display any subset (defined by the query constraints) of the AUX table. A second (related) feature is to bind this listing report to a relational field and make it selectable (for transition forms). That way, if you set up your report right, you can both display the related records on a state form and set the values on a transition form. The nice thing about this is that in a listing report you can select the columns you'd like to display. This approach won't meet everyone's requirements, but it could help.

I do understand the pain point you're describing, and would like you to know we're trying to get a solution for this and other related requests. It would be helpful if you could submit a support request for any specific enhancements you identify.
