How to add new fields to smart / global search

We have a requirement to be able to use the global search on a custom field.

We started out making a small text field and made it "searchable". we then populated some of the new fields in incident with normal but unusual words that wouldn't appear in other tickets (dinosaur, Alligator etc). We waited 15 minutes for any smart analytics updates, then searched for the unusual words. They did not appear. we waited overnight and nothing changed.

The smart search configuration has nothing we are looking for so i am now wondering if it is even possible to add fields to the smart search? If so how?

As a related question, is it listed anywhere which OOB fields are included?

Jonny,

The documentation says newly added records will be searchable (meaning the index job runs periodically and processes any new or modified records).

Hello,

The "Enable search" attribute does not refer to the IDOL index but it indicates the fields can be used for defining filters.

The global search covers all of Service Management. The search automatically searches all the record type fields that are indexed by IDOL and are configured to be searchable.

This seems to state that my new custom fields should be auto added, but they are not.
Sorry for needing baby steps, but please can you explain how I get a new field into the global search?

I think only system(internal) fields and core tables are indexed by IDOL. I could not find related information in detail  though.

Would be great if there is more information hidden somewhere 🙂
