To catch a dash or not to catch a dash?

Ok you guys that know the SMG pretty well, I have a question for you. We have the Secure Messaging Gateway catching spam for us (of course we use our own stuff). My question is: Is there anything inherently wrong with having an underscore in an email address? Here's what I see:

  • no_reply@microfocus.com

    • This email gets caught in SMG which says it's a spoof address. AND (here's the kicker) even if I whitelist it, SMG ignores the whitelist and still catches everything from that address as a spoof.

  • no-reply@microfocus.com

    • This email has no problem. Goes right through and SMG ignores it.

So...what's the difference in having an underscore vs a dash? Is this some setting our IT dept has set on SMG to never allow this address, even if it's white listed?

FWIW, I can "release" it and it gets sent to my inbox.

Just curious and everyone in our IT dept is too busy to look at it so I thought I'd ask you guys. 🙂

I'm not aware of anything in SMG specifically but, if you're using
GroupWise, the GWIA has some settings that affect how underscores are
processed.

I don't know how your system is configured or even if you are using
GroupWise any more but this info may be able to point IT in the right
direction.

Re: To catch a dash or not to catch a dash?

I was wondering (and am still wondering) if it's a configuration thing. The thing that burns me is that even though I put it in white list, it still gets stuck.

This is just speculation...

Maybe it doesn't need to be whitelisted. If SMG doesn't find a problem
it will try to deliver it. If GWIA changes the underscore to a space,
the email address may not be recognised and therefore can't be
delivered. How this is handled may depend on what has been configured.

Of course, at this point, I don't even know if you are using GroupWise.
😉

Ok, that one was good.

There is nothing inherently wrong with underscores in email addresses,
and I'm not aware of it being a bug or problem in SMG (and that means a
lot, cause SMG as a whole is just one huge bug to boot).

Of course, without knowing which version of SMG, how it's configured,
let alone where out of the gazillion possibilities it is scanning your
mails, it's really hard to guess. I wouldn't thnk though there even is a
possibility to stop whitelisting on purpose when you generally can, so
that might point to a bug again.

I think nobody else than your IT or the SMG developers (not sure if such
a thing even exists these days, my feeling is no) can answer it.

That's what I'm afraid of. Good to know it's not a specific problem with underscores though. Thanks.

I replied to this back on the 19th but looks like it didn't save it for some reason. This is from a custom setting that was set up on Micro Focus' SMG. It will need to be handled internally. I would open a RIO ticket.

Re: To catch a dash or not to catch a dash?

Thanks. I opened a RIO ticket, as have a number of other people. DXC is terrible. I did fix it by changing from an underscore to a dash, but I'd still like to know why they have this setting, and maybe someday will if DXC ever responds.
