Identity Governance and SaaS – Dining out at the Technology Restaurant

It’s Friday evening after a long week. You’re tired, hungry and would like to just relax and eat a nice meal. Ordering a restaurant meal is so appealing because you don’t have to prepare the meal and then worry about all of the cleanup work afterwards. You simply get to enjoy a good meal of your favorite food. Now for the interesting analogy: dining out at a nice restaurant sounds a lot like Software as a Service (SaaS). You let someone else handle most of the preparation, management, and maintenance, and you shift your focus to using the software and enjoying its benefits.

Identity Governance and SaaS – Dining out at the Technology Restaurant.jpgLet’s dive in and talk about the “meal” or software. Micro Focus’ most recent SaaS offering is NetIQ Identity Governance as a Service. Just served up, Identity Governance as a Service provides all the features and capabilities of the on-premises version of Identity Governance. Think about all the reasons you go to a restaurant to enjoy a good meal. First, no preparation. When you decide to consume Identity Governance as a Service there’s no muss and no fuss. You simply purchase the service, and Micro Focus prepares the software for you, with great partners and our own professional services organization to prepare it to your liking. When it’s time for upgrades and patches – we’ve got you covered.

Now, you’re asking yourself, will it be prepared to my liking? Well, of course! We realize that while several organizations are alike, there are nuances that make your organization unique and thus, the software needs to have the ability to adapt to your organization. If you like your steak prepared a certain way when you cook it at home, you wouldn’t go to a restaurant if they only cooked the steak one way and that wasn’t the way you like it. With Identity Governance as a Service, you can leverage all of the same features as the on-premises version and leverage those features to meet the needs of your organization. Why compromise? You should have all of the capabilities in SaaS as you would deploying software in your own data center. Identity Governance as a Service delivers just that, the same features, regardless of where it runs.

During these times, we have also grown accustomed to getting a great meal at the restaurant and bringing it home to eat or having it delivered. You’re asking yourself, what does this mean to SaaS? Well, how do you bridge the gap between the restaurant and your home – or in IT-speak, between applications that reside within your data center and the Identity Governance service? After all, those applications in your data center need governance too. How does Micro Focus bridge that gap? A Cloud Bridge of course! In the same way a food delivery service brings restaurant food to your house, the Cloud Bridge delivers on-premises identity and application data to Identity Governance as a Service. It’s easy to set up: you deploy containerized software in your data center, Micro Focus SaaS Operations walks you through three configurations to set up the connectivity and security, and you incorporate your on-premises identities and applications.

Continuing with our food analogy, another option these days is to order meal kits, where you receive all the ingredients and prepare the meal at home. Let’s call that the hybrid approach. This is another great option that we have available with our SaaS solution. We realize our customers have spent years investing in NetIQ Identity Manager (and of course for that we greatly thank you). Micro Focus is committed to not only protecting that investment but helping to extend it to the cloud if that is path you want to take. Identity Governance SaaS has the ability to consume identities from your existing Identity Manager on premises through the Cloud Bridge so that you can easily and quickly begin building your governance program. Not only will you preserve your years of investment in identity lifecycle policy and provisioning, but now you can gain a wealth of new value from your Identity Manager investment. As Identity Governance SaaS evolves into Identity Governance and Administration SaaS, you can easily transition from Identity Manager on premises to SaaS. Again, you’ll be leveraging all the investments you’ve made and more importantly gaining even more value for that investment.

If you’re a chef or the type of person that loves to cook at home - in other words your organization wants to continue to run software in your data center - don’t worry. Micro Focus is committed to delivering the same software to our customers who desire to run software in their data center. We will continue to deliver the same powerful, full-featured software that we have delivered over the past 20 years. And as we add new features, we’ll incorporate them into both our SaaS offering and on-premises software.

Lastly, who wants to clean up after cooking and enjoying a great meal? All that maintenance! A great meal should end with a delicious, sweet dessert, not a lot of clean-up work.  The beauty of Software as a Service is you don’t have to worry about the maintenance. From installing and keeping up with versions to applying interim patches and updates, we take care of all of that. You get to enjoy all of the great benefits of the new features and once again, we’ll do all the work.

Since I’ve succeeded in making myself hungry writing this blog and I need to go get something to eat, I’ll conclude with what’s next. We’re certainly not going to stop with Identity Governance SaaS, and we’re excited about the next course in our meal which will include Identity Manager SaaS and even more importantly our Identity and Access Management platform Software as a Service offerings. I’ll be providing updates of what’s next in the near future.

In the meantime, please join us at our next webinar, How to Build a Strong IAM Foundation with Identity Governance and Administration We’ll be discussing how IGA provides the identity foundation that powers today’s most important security initiatives, including Zero Trust, Digital Transformation, and Cyber Resilience. I look forward to seeing you there!
