Over the past few months, the Micro Focus team has been hard at work overhauling (ZENworks) Micro Focus Application Virtualization. We’re pleased to announce that come August, Application Virtualization will be replaced by a new product name: Micro Focus Desktop Containers—the only solution on the market for Windows desktop application containerization across any Windows x86/x86_64 device.
Essentially, the two editions of Micro Focus Desktop Containers that we will be releasing—Micro Focus Desktop Containers Professional Edition, and Turbo for Micro Focus Desktop Containers—will use the same technology that made Micro Focus Application Virtualization so popular. Desktop Containers will continue to provide top-of-the-line application containerization management and self-services for customers.
However, it will contain a few distinct changes that will make it even more effective and user-friendly.
First and foremost, Desktop Containers includes a new add-on (Turbo for Micro Focus Desktop Containers) that will streamline the actual containerization process. We discovered that this process was one of our customers’ biggest pain points when using Micro Focus Application Virtualization. Many end users said it was too difficult, as it required having specific packaging skills. Rest assured, the application containerization process will be much simpler in Desktop Containers. Customers will be able to containerize Windows applications in order to minimize testing and maximize compatibility with other applications.
Other highly requested additions you can expect to see include:
IP blocking: Using Turbo for Micro Focus Desktop Containers, customers will be able to isolate specific network resources that an application can access—thus providing a safer and more controlled operating environment.
Application snapshots: Moving forward, it will be possible to take snapshots of applications while they are running.
Pre-built virtualized applications: Turbo for Micro Focus Desktop Containers will offer a subscription service containing hundreds of pre-built containerized applications, for reduced time to value.
Browser Redirector: Turbo for Micro Focus Desktop Containers also offers the browser redirector so that you can automatically cause containerized apps to be launched when the user visits a specific link in their browser. Coupled with the IP blocking feature this provides a great solution for legacy web applications that require old browsers, NPAPI plug-ins and Java.
