Just recently, a friend of mine complained to his son that he hates using his mobile device at night because the glare hurts his eyes. His son recommended an app called Twilight, which automatically dims the screen after sunset. Floored, my friend installed Twilight onto his phone without thinking twice.

This exchange was alarming to me, because the app was installed on a company-owned device. My friend did not have to ask IT for permission, or even scan the app for malware before installing it.

It made me realize just how easily third-party applications can make their way into the enterprise without IT ever knowing about them.

Why is this scenario troubling? A third-party app can potentially create a backdoor hackers can use to access the device. Or, the app could silently lift sensitive data and upload it to a private server.

Take the wildly popular Pokémon GO app, for instance; there is widespread concern about whether the app is safe for use due to the information that it collects. And yet, it’s more than likely that just about everyone in your office has it installed on their smartphones!

Mobile applications, though—despite their risks—are a critical tool in the modern workspace right alongside BYOD and end user self-services. So, you can’t outright ban them. Apps are vital for just about every business process, from communicating and sharing files to keeping morale high. Who wants to work in an office that bans cutting-edge applications and technologies? Companies should be embracing them.

The challenge is that many businesses are simply behind the times with their workspace enablement technologies. We here at Micro Focus have discovered countless organizations where employees are using personal devices, applications and cloud services without the guidance of IT. As such, these enterprises are facing many risks related to security and compliance.

With the help of Micro Focus’s ZENworks platform—which enables the modern workspace through a unified approach to endpoint management—your IT department can take control over all of its connected devices. ZENworks centralizes the user workspace by providing tools for user self-services (for tasks like downloading approved applications, printing and sharing files), automation and application, and data and device management. It also secures the workspace, and assures compliance for all licenses, contracts and more.

Best of all, ZENworks operates under a single pane of glass—allowing IT workers a complete overview of the entire workspace.

So, don’t crack down on your workers and take their technologies away. Instead, take the smarter approach to workspace enablement with ZENworks.
