AgentManager Installation issues - database connectivity

Hi,

I'm trying to install AgentManager 7.1 and will later connect to
Sentinel Core version 7.1.2. Here is my setup and my issues:

Computer1: Windows 2008 MS SQL 2012 Standard
Computer2: Windows 2012 for AgentManager Central Computer

Facts:
Both computers are in the same vLAN, they can ping each other, resolve
name etc
Windows firewall DISABLED on Computer1 (database server - i.e. allows
all incoming connections)
Windows firewall ENABLED on computer2 (CentralComputer) but firewall
ports to TCP/1433, TPC/135, UDP/1434 and TCP/1024-65535 allowed IN from
Computer1

1. I ran the AgentManager setup on Computer1 and selected Database
option ONLY
2. AgentManager database created on Computer1 under MS SQL 2012
3. Logged on to Computer2 and ran the CentralComputer + Console setup
4. I get database error when provide database name as "Computer1" OR
"Computer1\AgentManager"
Error:
Errot 27502. Agent Manager cannot connect to he specified Microsoft SQL
Server Instance, "xxxx\AgentManager". Ensure you specify a valid
Microsoft SQL Server instance using the format [DB Server
Name]\[Instance Name], that MSDTC is configured correctly, and that
TCP/IP is enabled on the SQL server

What do you think is going wrong?

Regards,
Pras

Re: AgentManager Installation issues - database connectivity

hi,

I don't know what's changed (nothing that I've done) but it went past
this to next stage. I'm now asked for authentication to connect to
AgentManager database on Computer2. We created a database user, given
db_owner rights to all 3 agentmanager databases but its failing on
authentication. So we created a local windows account with db_owner to
the 3 databases for agent manager but still getting authentication
failure.

Is there a database setup guide that I can use?

Regards,
Pras

The SAM installation guide should have most of this documented. Some
thoughts off the top of my head though:

1) Make very sure you don't have a connectivity issue, even a sporadic
one. The SAM infrastructure is fairly resilient, and intermittent
issues with the DB are by design not fatal or even a problem - in small
amounts. However, if you have a longstanding intermittant problem
with the DB this can translate into a lot of different and difficult to
diagnose symptoms.

2) SAM expects domain accounts for its core services. Some customers
do use 'shadow' users (where the username is defined on both ends with
the same passwords) but it's important to be aware this is not a
certified/tested configuration.

Re: AgentManager Installation issues - database connectivity

Hi,

I just hope the document was practical / realistic ..... 😞

We have decided to deploy un-managed agents and deploy them using
existing infrastructure. So I don't need a trust between
CentralComputer / database and end nodes that are being monitored.

I've created a local user account on the database server (Computer1)
with local administrative rights and db_owner permissions on the 2
AgentManager databases. But still I haven't managed to get it installed
properly.

Appreciate issues between connectivity, I don't believe there any as
both servers are on the same vlan and the local windows firewall has
been configured to trust local vlan.

What I'm really looking for is some kind of a database guide that
defines configuration for creating useraccounts etc - sorry I'm not a
full blown DBA and am struggling to get them understand the product
properly.

Regards,
Pras
