How can I make a High Availability in Service Desk 4.5 Sp11?

I had 2 servers with Service Page and Sevice Desk Application installed in each one, working togheter, both connected a Oracle Database. The Servers are using NLB.

I mean, for example, if the "HP Service Desk service" down in Server "A", the users probably not access the database. Right? How the best way to make a High Availability environment?

hi!

If you do Windows NLB i think you can achieve this.

If you do Windows NLB, there will be virtual IP address, and the users will be connecting to this. In the back-end, the NLB will connect to the available server.

Windows NLB is available in Windows Advanced Server and Windows 2003 (all favors)

I have a some stuffs for this, please let me know if you need it.

Hello Daniel,

The best way to accomplish this is to use DB cluster and service desk internal load balancer. You should read throughly the Service Desk Administrator Guide that explains how to set up multiple application servers.

Hi,

Join the OVSD application servers with the "Join multiple servers option. All production application servers should point to the same database. As George said cluster the Database to provide for high availability of the DB.

If you have enough resources on each production server you could also run multiple application servers so if an application server on one physical box fails you still have the other application server available.

Are you accessing service pages with 2 different URLS or with the same URL?

Does it make sense the following scenario ?

- 2 Windows Server (2003 Enterprise) clustered
- Service Desk installed on both (with Load balancing checked)
- All external development, i.e. java procedure, stored on shared storage
- 1 Db Oracle clustered on two HP-UX servers.

Any further suggestion ?

hi!

We are with NLB and it is working great with us. Users never had any down time for SD.

For the DB, (we are using SQL) we use CA BrighStor, which gives high avavil.

To add to the above remarks, you might also want to think about the availability of the partitions on which the database files are stored. The problem here is that you might want a very sophisticated replication alogorithm, otherwise you automatically duplicate corruption from the primary to the secondary database.

Also, in my experience you cannot count on automatic reconnection of the application server(s) to the database should the database go down. So there will always be some unavailability when you need to reconnect to the database, after failing over to a secondary DB server. On the other hand, the clients WILL reconnect automatically to an application server.

First, thank you all to the replies.

Based in the Attachment posted, my scenario is the same as the Architecture 2. The Service Desk, the DB servers and the FTP Server for attachments are clustered too, and works good.

I attach a file with my problem and my question about the connection between "Service Pages" and "Application Servers".

hi!

I will send you the stuff another 15 to 20 mins.
Hope you are clear about the Windows NLB and how it works.
once the nlb is configured and up, the virtual IP will be converted to hexa and added as the last part of the MAC (of the virtual IP).
Then windows will make the MAC of all the member servers to this. ie: when you say arp -a, you will see different IP address with same MAC address

HP supports MS SQL cluster for the DB server with SP16. While HP hasn't tested and doesn't support any Oracle or Unix-based clustering solutions, they are in use successfully by many customers.
