issue with restarting SM service

Jump to solution
Hi Gurus..

We are facing some issues when we restart servicemanager services.
Gives error : could not start/stop the service.." And status shows 'Stopping..'

This stays like that & the only option is to restart the machine.

Is this related to SM server or windows services?

One more issue is with SM System status, most of the schedulers wont start up automatically.
we have to start them thru "Start Scheduler"

There must be a fix for this..!!

Request your suggestions/hints/help on this..

Thanks in advance

Ok. Let's get tougher.
You can try sm -shutdown or sm -shutdown:0.
This will force a shutdown.
Then run sm -shutipc in case there are some ipc still open.
The shutdown command should also stop your SM window service.
See if this works.

Please upload the log files. sm.log and alert.logs for reference.

It would be helpful to include your sm.ini file (x out the database userid/password and any other id/password combinations), the sm.cfg, and finally the exact commands that you are using to start and stop the system.

Sanzz.

I really don't see anything wrong with your sm.ini setup. I'm not familiar with the last 2 lines in your sm.cfg; have you ever gotten it to work? Where are you at with SM7.11? Is this a production system or is it an out of box system that you've started to work with?

I'm leaning towards commenting out the last two lines of the sm.cfg and trying to start it up that way.

When you stop the SM server, how do you do it? I issue the smstop command in Linux, but if you're using a Windows service, you'd just be stopping the service.

One other thing I can think of... If the server is supposed to be down, go into the database, table infooldm1 and check for a record scdb.system; sometimes deleting that record, when the system IS DOWN, will allow the system start to perform correctly.

Hi,

The last two lines are for Connect-It and SC SMTP (email) service/function.

You can troubleshoot by running the SM Services in CMD instead as a Windows Service. This should provide more output.

@ james,

this is on the production setup.
last two lines are for the connectIT & smtp services.

from windows i do this from services.msc
since this is creating a prblm..
i have put the SM service on manual mode & when i have to restart the service - i am restarting the machine
then after it is restarted - i am starting the SM Service manually.

@ jov,

i wl try from cmd line.
hope it wud not have any issues..

How abt the issue with schedulers on system status??
is that related to SM services??

thanks,
sanzz.

What version of SM are you on ? It sounds like my old problems when I was using SM 7.0 which was cause by sm.exe not being killed or closed properly or not given enough time to close.
My workaround was after stoppping sm via services.msc, give it a minute or two, check task manager. If I still find any sm.exe (normally two of them) running, I killed them via task manager, then I start up my sm service which will start up fine.
