MeasureSet: MEASURE_COUNTER_CUSTOMCOUNTER vs. MEASURE_COUNTER_AVERAGE

I frequently use MeasureSet for saving custom monitoring values and charting them in the overview report afterwards.

From the documentation I could never find out the difference between the counter types MEASURE_COUNTER_CUSTOMCOUNTER and MEASURE_COUNTER_AVERAGE. Could someone explain it? I have always used the CUSTOMCOUNTER, but I am wondering what the AVERAGE option is made for.

When doing "MeasureSet(<counter name>, MEASURE_COUNTER_AVERAGE, nVal);" I get an error (SP 18.0): "MeasureSet RT: 18 - Measure not defined for measure point".
