QUESTION
----------------------------------

What could cause the error message "*** Error: Invalid handle - Expecting a file handle"?

ANSWER
----------------------------------

The problem may be with the indentation of the script, e.g. if the FileClose method is being called within the While loop when information is being read from the document that has been opened

The following example shows how the indentation should be set: -

[ ] HFILE hFile
[ ] STRING sLine
[ ] list of string lsDetails
[ ]
[-] testcase example() appstate none
     [ ] hFile = FileOpen ("Path to document", FM_READ)
     [-] while (FileReadLine (hFile, sLine))
          [ ] ListAppend (lsDetails, sLine)
     [ ] FileClose (hFile)
     [ ] listprint(lsDetails)

To receive the error the fileclose method will be within the while loop as shown below, which generates the error message as SilkTest is attempting to close the document every time there is a line in the document within the while loop, causing the problem.

[ ] HFILE hFile
[ ] STRING sLine
[ ] list of string lsDetails
[ ]
[-] testcase example() appstate none
     [ ] hFile = FileOpen ("Path to document", FM_READ)
     [-] while (FileReadLine (hFile, sLine))
          [ ] ListAppend (lsDetails, sLine)
          [ ] FileClose (hFile)
     [ ] listprint(lsDetails)
