Why am I no longer able to read or query an Excel Spread Sheet in Silk Test?

Why am I no longer able to read or query an Excel Spread Sheet in Silk Test?

The roll out of Windows Update KB4041681 can cause an issue which prevents third party applications such as Silk Test from opening or reading data from Microsoft Excel .xls files. This known issue is documented by Microsoft in the following article:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4041681/windows-7-update-kb4041681

As an example in Silk Test Classic you may encounter an error such as “(HY000) [Microsoft][ODBC Excel Driver] External table is not in the expected format” when trying to access an .xls file via an odbc driver.

Whereas in Silk Test Workbench you may find that the .xls Excel spreadsheet no longer appears visible in the Active Data section.

Microsoft are currently aware of this issue and plan to provide an update, in the interim you can work around the issue by implementing the following:

Uninstall the windows update kb4041681

If that is not possible then for Silk Test Classic and/or Silk4J/Silk4NET you can:

  • Convert your Excel Spread Sheet to use a new version of Excel such as the .xlsx format
  • Modify your “SYSTEM DSN” entry for the ODBC driver and update it to use a newer version such as: Microsoft Excel Driver ’15.0.0’ version

 For Silk Test Workbench:

  • Convert your Excel Spread Sheet to use a new version of Excel such as the .xlsx format
