When opening an application or folder through TestPartner it is recommended that the Run Program command is used, however sometimes you may want to test double clicking on an icon to open a program. When playing back these steps in a test script or visual test the following error message can sometimes appear:

This error is more common on Windows XP machines than on Vista or Windows 7 machines. The reason why this error can occur is due to the desktop wallpaper image which is often "Group Policy" deployed and which is recognized by TestPartner as an Active Window. For example, during the record process TestPartner may assume that Windows Program Manager is a browser window; which means that TestParner cannot find the desktop correctly and so throws the above error.
The workaround for this issue, apart from using the Run Program command, you can remove the group policy access to the wallpaper from the System Registry. This can be done by doing the following:
1) Go to “Start | Run” and type “RegEdit”
2) Browse to “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\”
3) Modify the key “Wallpaper” and remove the “value data”
4) Restart the machine
Please note: The registry only needs to be changed if you have company-wide wallpaper which is set by group policy, otherwise you can just disable the active desktop by going to:
• "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer"
• Then change the binary value of the registry key called "ForceActiveDesktopOn" to 0 and that of "NoActiveDesktop" to 1.
