TestPartner 6.3.1 - The SQL server ODBC Driver type is incorrect. Use the ODBC Data Source Administrator to reconfigure the DSN 'TestPartner' to use the SQL Native Driver

Description:

TestPartner 6.3.1: Connecting to TestPartner Database have encountered following error message:

The SQL server ODBC Driver type is incorrect. Use the ODBC Data Source Administrator to reconfigure the DSN 'TestPartner' to use the SQL Native Driver.

Reason:

Possible reason for this error:

SQL Server Native Client driver that is not compatible

Creating a user DSN for TestPartner

Database server could be 2012, 2014

System Environment:

Windows 7 64 BIT, Windows Server 2008 64 BIT, Windows Server 2012 64 BIT

Resolution:

Step 1: SQL Server Native Client:

Download the driver for ODBC from the following link. The SQL Native Client required for Test Partner on Windows 7 - scroll down to "Microsoft SQL Server Native Client" section and download "X64 Package (sqlncli_x64.msi)"

Step 2: Set the default location for 32 bit ODBC driver

Go to Control Panel | System and Security | Administrative Tools | Data Sources (ODBC) – right click on it and hit properties – change the “Target” and “Start In” as follows:

Step 3: Creating a Blank TestPartner Database:

If you are using SQL Server 2012 or higher and want to create a blank TestPartner database then you may set the compatibility level to SQL Server 2008 or 2005. See the below screenshot. Please note, SQL server 2012, 2014 is not a supported environment for Test Partner 6.3.1.

Step 4: Creating TestPartner DSN:

Go to Control Panel | System and Security | Administrative Tools | Data Sources (ODBC) | Click on System DSN | Hit Add and follow the Wizard for ‘Microsoft SQL Server DSN Configuration” – Once finished you will see the DSN [highlighted] is added in ‘System DSN” list. Please note, user should not use User DSN and SQL server client.

 

Step 5: Creating TestPartner Database Schema using Database Maintenance Utility:

Go to Program Files | Micro Focus | TestPartner | Utilities | Database Maintenance

From File | New Database | SQL Server

Select the ODBC data source for SQL server – provided user detail to connect to the SQL server.

 

Hit Create

 

Hit Yes – it should create a TestPartner database schema.

Step 6: Configure Database connection:

Go to Program Files | Micro Focus | TestPartner | Utilities | Database Connection Configuration [see the screenshot below]

 

Hit Validate and it should pass the validation. Hit Apply. The problem should disappear.
