SiteScope 11.24 SMTP Retries

In my environment we are having a issue with SMTP retries. It appears when SiteScope attempts sends a email, it tries the primary and then the backup SMTP servers, but then gives up. Is there an option to increase the amount of retries until trying the backup email server?

I've been looking around, but haven't found anything yet.

Thanks,

David

Re: SiteScope 11.24 SMTP Retries

Hello,

I couldnt find a specific configuration for changing smtp retries, but we can try to modify the following line in the master.config:

_mailTimeout=  and add any value, in seconds, a check out how it behavies after the change is applied.

Re: SiteScope 11.24 SMTP Retries

This actually sounds more of Enhancement Request, as historically the built-in retry of primary SMTP to backup SMTP change had been covering many situations.

BTW in case both SMTP servers are failing, typically due to some network/mail server issues, immediate extra retries should likely fail once again. While waiting the recovery of SMTP server, the real situation of the monitored targets could change as well. So perhaps the Trigger settings with 'repeat' like below might be additionally useful, depending on the purpose of alerting.

e.g.

Chapter 102: Configure SiteScope Alerts

-> Initially after <X> times, and repeat every <Y> times

Other immediate workarounds should be like:

  1. Implement send-mail script with required retries in custom Script Action. (One could search & use "CDO.Message" from .vbs on Windows, or could wrap the built-in mail command in shell on Linux as a building block.)
  2. Install SMTP (relay) server locally on SiteScope host so that it could help queue up messages to external SMTP server(s), e.g. in case of network outages.
  3. If one's SMTP server is unreliable & highly failing on normal usages, one should find out more reliable SMTP server(s).

Re: SiteScope 11.24 SMTP Retries

Hello David,

Make sure that SMTP mail server hostname is resolvable from SiteScope and check:

POP check delay (seconds)
After SiteScope sends the test message, it immediately logs into the mail account to verify that the message has been received. If the message has not been received, SiteScope automatically waits 10 seconds before it checks again. You can adjust this wait time by indicating an alternate number of seconds to wait in this box.

Default value: 10 seconds

Re: SiteScope 11.24 SMTP Retries

Appreciate everyones input for this problem

After working with the email gateway person, the issue seems to stem with the number of reports going out at the same time. We have hundred(s) of Management reports, and many go out at the same time. The work around may be to stagger the reports times so they don't step on each other?

1. We use IP addresses for the primary and backup gateways (No hostnames or FQDN)

2. Default timeout of 60 seconds before using the backup Gateway.

Maybe an enhancement request is in order, because larger environments may have hundreds of reports going at the same time, and it may be necessary to have SiteScope retry the connection before giving up.  The time-out setting gives me an idication that SiteScope is only trying 1 time, waiting 60 seconds, before moving on to the backup Gateway and then giving it 60 seconds to respond.  I just don't know how receptive the lab will be to adding the functionality of SMTP retries as opposed to time-outs. On top of that, I'm not sure if it fixes the issue.

Re: SiteScope 11.24 SMTP Retries

If we are talking about scheduled Management Report emails, that should be more of sequential First-In-First-Out style batch process. Do you have any evidence that we can reconfirm that SiteScope is indeed establishing hundreds of simultaneous SMTP connections around the scheduled Management Reprots?

Besides the enterprise class SMTP server should be able to handle such load. It's not very strange to imagine hundreds of mail clients connecting to the same SMTP server in enterprise IT system.
