Receive the “Going to run out of storage capacity” event in OMi with the SE Management Pack

The administrator can predict in OMi and get an alert for when her/his storage capacity will be running out. This is easily possible using the new OMi and SE 9.7 integration which shows all the Storage Essentials events in the OMi console. These events are related to the CI’s in RTSM for easy troubleshooting. We use here, the “trending” policies which are an implementation of the predictive capabilities of Storage Essentials.

It is easy to set this up and receive other similar events.

Step 1: Create a policy in Storage Essentials Policy Manager of the type utilization, pointing to the storage device that you would like monitored. Select a policy template with the word “trending” based on which type of storage capacity you would like to see monitored.

Click on “Next” and put in a number when the event should trigger based on when the free storage is likely to be less than that. You can also set the number of days to forecast ahead and based on how many days it should show the trending. Select “Generate Event.”

Select the severity of the Event and you are done. Test out the policy using the button on the user interface. You may also set up a policy similarly for under-utilization.

Step 2: When this event is triggered in SE, it will automatically show up in OMi.

You will thus know in the consolidated storage and system console which is OMi, that a certain storage system is about to run out of storage capacity. To see the details of the Storage capacity and where it is allocated, you can then go to the SE console and SE reports as you would normally do.

Setting up the Management Pack for the SE and OMi is easy, you may download it from LN at: https://hpln.hp.com/group/omi-management-pack-hp-storage-essentials.
