Probe upgrade scenario should be changed

Idea ID 2829843

Probe upgrade scenario should be changed

After an auto upgrade the probe is shown as successful and connected but didn’t return any discovery result.
What went wrong? The Probe DB Upgrade wasn’t successful.

At the moment the upgrade steps are (simplified):

  1. Precheck Probe Upgrade
    1. When ok, go to 2)
    2. Otherwise Exit

  2. Upgrade Probe Software
    1. When ok, go to 3)
    2. Otherwise Exit

  3. Precheck Probe PostgreSQL DB Upgrade
    1. When ok, go to 4)
    2. Otherwise Exit

  4. Upgrade Probe PostgreSQL DB
    1. When ok, go to 5)
    2. Otherwise Exit

  5. Merge old and new configuration files
    1. When ok, go to 6)
    2. Otherwise Exit

  6. Finished

“Precheck Probe PostgreSQL DB Upgrade” should be done as step 2 otherwise the Probe Software is upgraded but DB won’t be upgraded.

So you will have an upgraded probe SW without an upgraded DB and as a result no discovery will run (error shown is log files is “(ResultProcessDBRedundant.java:353) - Some Error occurred when processing Redundant results:java.lang.NullPointerException”).

Definitely agree, there are still problems with probe upgrades... Ivan

I found that my probe upgrade failed because I run probe service as a domain user but the DB service as a system account. Upgrade failed because it was not able to upgrade the database while trying to impersonate the domain user. I worked around the issue by switching all the probes to run as local system user before auto upgrading probes.
