Troubleshooting the standalone SOLR environment?

Piggybacking off Idea ID 1794237 for more SOLR troubleshooting help...

I setup my standalone SOLR server per the install guide, and it seems to be working from the JMX commands:  viewSolrCluster and viewSolrCloudConfiguration  and the UCMDBServer search.log doesn't show any errors.

How do I know that SOLR is really working correctly?  I tried some Advanced Searches in the CMS Browser, and I can see the searcherExecutor threads in the localhost:8983/solr thread dumps.  Is that it?

What I don't see is the SOLR server filesystem growing with indexes like the old  UCMDBServer\search\solr_dp\customer1\data\index.  Solr server directory is still 170MB even after reindexing and a few searches.

Any other tips?
